Uplift

A mind is raised, by surgery, by virus, by patient engineering, from wherever it was to somewhere its makers call higher, and the story audits the word higher. Uplift is the awakening\'s biological sibling: where the made mind starts from zero, the uplifted one starts from somewhere, and drags its old world\'s furniture up the stairs.

The premise\'s bill is authorship of another\'s ascent. Who consented, who profits, what was lost that the ledger never listed, and the desk grades strictly on whether the gift is priced from the recipient\'s side, since the uplifter\'s satisfaction is the cheapest perspective in the room. The strongest versions let the raised mind judge its raisers, and let the judgement sting. The delay on the mirror is short: every parent, teacher, and coloniser recognises the shape, which is the trope\'s second edge. The failure mode is uplift as promotion, intelligence written as a salary bump with no interior cost, which skips the only invoice the premise exists to present.
