Something else is out there, and now it is here, or we are. First contact is the genre's founding ceremony: the moment humanity's sample size of minds goes from one to two, and every assumption smuggled inside the word intelligence comes up for audit.

The bill the premise presents is epistemological. Contact stories are graded, at this desk, on how honestly they price understanding: language, intention, and even the recognition that communication is occurring are achievements, not givens, and the best versions make the work of comprehension the plot rather than its preamble. The delay on the mirror is short, since every contact narrative is secretly about how humans meet the unfamiliar among themselves.
