The Unreliable Instrument

The story\'s only witness is compromised, a narrator whose senses, memory, or translation layer cannot be trusted, and in this genre the compromise is frequently hardware. The unreliable instrument is the literary device given an engineering diagram: damaged recall, alien perception, a mind honestly reporting inputs the reader learns to doubt.

The premise\'s bill is epistemology made personal. The reader must reconstruct the world from a flawed feed, and the desk grades on fairness, the distortion consistent, the true signal recoverable in retrospect, since an instrument that lies arbitrarily is not unreliable but merely authorial. The form\'s deepest versions make the flaw load-bearing rather than ornamental: the gap between what the witness reports and what the reader assembles is the story\'s actual subject, and closing it changes both. The mirror is uncomfortable and immediate, every reader runs on exactly one such instrument. The failure mode is the twist-shaped variant, unreliability hoarded for a single reveal, which trades a whole book\'s worth of productive doubt for one chapter\'s surprise.
