Grumpy / Sunshine

One character has weather; the other is the weather. The pairing sets a guarded, abrasive, or simply tired lead against one who runs on open warmth, and the story is the slow negotiation between the two climates.

The promise runs both directions, which is why the trope endures. The sunshine learns their brightness is not too much, that someone can receive it at full strength without wilting; the grump learns their armour is not the price of being loved, that someone will keep arriving anyway. The desk's test is the softening: it must be earned and specific, one person's storm quieting for one person only, because a grump who mellows for everyone was merely rude. Craft failure comes in two shapes. A grump with no interior, cruelty passed off as texture, curdles the contract; a sunshine with no shadow, cheer without cost, turns the dynamic into caretaking. The strongest versions give the bright one the heavier grief.
