The Mind Upload

A person is copied into the machine, and the question is what arrived. Upload stories put continuity itself under audit: the pattern persists, the body does not, and everything the reader believes about identity gets asked to show its working, is the copy a survivor, a descendant, or a very convincing bereavement.

The premise\'s bill is selfhood\'s paperwork. Duplication, forking, editing, deletion, each operation trivial for software is a metaphysical event for a person, and the desk grades on whether the story lets the operations mean something, since an upload whose copies multiply without consequence has quietly answered the identity question with nobody home. The strong versions give the uploaded a stake in the question, grief for the flesh, vertigo at the fork, the discovery of what survives translation and what was always the body\'s. The mirror shows a species already backing itself up in fragments and calling the fragments memory. The failure mode is upload as transport, death waved through as a file operation, which spends the premise\'s entire estate without reading the will.
