The Magic Academy

A school that grades survival, and a rival at the next desk. The magic academy imports the campus romance's whole apparatus, timetables, rivalries, reputations, corridors, and raises the tuition to mortal: exams can kill, classmates may be ordered to, and the institution itself is usually hiding something in the syllabus. Proximity is compulsory, alliance is curriculum, and the love interest is on the same class list as the threat.

The shape's promise is intimacy under examination. Nobody performs a curated self through a year of shared danger; the academy strips its students to competence and character, and the romance is built from what is left, the hand offered in the trial, the notes shared against the rules, the rival who quietly rewrites the odds in your favour. The desk's test is the school's teeth: the danger must actually bite someone the reader knows, because an academy whose menace is all prospectus makes the intimacy cheap. The common failure is the timetable forgotten by act two, the school reduced to a backdrop with towers.
