The Dragon Bond

A creature chooses you, publicly, and the choosing is the certification. The dragon bond is the genre's grandest credential: an intelligent, dangerous, unbribable judge looks into a candidate and says yes or no in front of everyone, and the yes cannot be faked, inherited, or purchased. Whatever the dragon certifies, courage, worth, a hidden fire, the reader may now believe without further evidence.

As a romance device the bond works by proxy. The dragon's judgement of the lead vouches for the love interest's judgement too, and when both riders' dragons take an interest in each other, the book has a second courtship running in commentary above the first, older, blunter, and frequently rude about the humans' pace. The desk's test is the bond's price: certification this absolute must cost, in vulnerability shared, in grief exposure if a dragon falls, or the credential is a participation medal with wings. The common failure is the dragon as vehicle, a mount with a name, which spends the device and pockets nothing.
