Hive Minds

Many bodies, one intention, and the pronoun problem the genre keeps returning to. The hive is first contact\'s hardest case: not a stranger mind but a strange arithmetic of mind, where the unit of selfhood sits somewhere other than the skull, and every human instinct about individuals, negotiation, guilt, mercy, one death at a time, misfires on arrival.

The premise\'s bill is the cost of coherence. A collective that thinks as one has paid for it somewhere, in dissent, in privacy, in the possibility of a minority report, and the desk audits whether the story prices the payment or merely admires the synchrony. The strong versions also run the audit in reverse, letting the hive find human individuality as horrifying as we find its absence, a symmetry that keeps the trope speculative rather than merely monstrous. The mirror needs little delay, every crowd, corporation, and comment section hums at the frequency. The failure mode is the hive as horde, collectivity used as a licence for guiltless violence, which discards the pronoun problem that made the premise worth writing.
