Roommates to Lovers

There is a rota on the fridge in two handwritings. It has been there for fourteen months, it is honoured about eighty per cent of the time, and both of them know exactly which eighty per cent. Roommates to lovers is a plot-shape in which two people sharing a home become a couple, and it is forced proximity's domestic cousin: the confinement is voluntary, ongoing, and paid for monthly. What the shape promises is knowledge acquired without courtship. These two have seen each other ill, hungover, unemployed, and at four in the morning. They know what the other is like when nobody is performing, which is information a dating couple takes two years to gather and frequently never gets at all. The make-or-break element is the domestic texture. That is the test and it is the shape's whole material. A book that establishes a flatshare and then writes scenes that could happen anywhere has wasted the premise. The shape lives in specifics: who buys the milk, the argument about the heating that is not about the heating, the noise of somebody else's routine through a wall, the negotiation about a guest. Density of shared ordinary life is what makes the eventual shift feel earned rather than convenient. The failure mode is the co-located stranger. They share an address and nothing else. The flat has no character, the domestic negotiations never appear, and the reader is given two people who happen to have the same postcode. There is a second failure worth naming, which is the vanished stakes. A flatshare is a financial and practical arrangement, and a relationship that goes wrong inside one is a catastrophe: somebody has to move, on a deposit, in a market. Books that ignore this remove the shape's best available tension, which is that these two cannot break up cleanly and both know it. The strongest versions use the lease as a clock. Six months remain. One of them is thinking about leaving and has not said so, and the renewal date is approaching, and the conversation about whether to sign again is the conversation about everything. There is also the third flatmate, an underused device, who is in the house, is not stupid, and has to live with whatever these two are doing to the atmosphere. It is worth distinguishing the shape from forced proximity proper, since both trade on shared space. Forced proximity is imposed and temporary: a storm, an assignment, a cottage. A flatshare was chosen, is indefinite, and comes with a contract, which means the pressure is lower and the accumulation is far greater. One produces a pressure cooker. The other produces a slow saturation, and the shapes are not interchangeable. The renewal comes up. One of them raises it at the wrong moment, badly, and the other one has been waiting three weeks for it to be raised at all. That is the shape. Not the flat, but two people who cannot separate without one of them losing a home.
