Foreknowledge

Someone can see what is coming, and the story is what seeing does to them. Prophecy dressed in physics, foreknowledge is the genre\'s cleanest instrument for its oldest question, whether knowing the future leaves anything worth calling a choice, and the desk shelves it as a device rather than a decoration because the strong versions build the entire book on the answer.

The premise\'s bill is agency, itemised. If the vision is fixed, the story owes an account of what willing means inside it, and the great entries pay in full, discovering purpose, performance, or peace where free rein used to be. If the vision branches, the bill converts to responsibility, every foreseen path a decision the seer can no longer plead ignorance of. The desk grades on consistency of the mechanism and on the seer\'s interiority, since foreknowledge experienced from outside is just plot privilege. The failure mode is prophecy as scheduling, the foreseen used to arrange coincidences while the question underneath, what it is like to remember forwards, goes unasked.
