Humanity on a distant planet has forgotten how it arrived there, until a vast conquering civilization descends and takes scientists, researchers, and other valuable captives from their home. The abducted group is placed among species already absorbed into an empire that treats intelligence as a resource and failure as disposal. A junior academic, accustomed to supporting more celebrated minds, begins noticing that the imposed competition is not the only game being played. Understanding the captors may matter more than outperforming the other prisoners. The novel frames first contact from a position of overwhelming disadvantage, where resistance, cooperation, and adaptation carry different risks. Scientific skill helps, but social perception becomes equally important. The central tension lies in learning how an alien system thinks without allowing that system to define what humanity is worth.
