Sabriel

Raised beyond the wall of a kingdom where uncontrolled magic and restless dead remain active threats, a young woman has been kept at a careful distance from her father’s dangerous work. When he disappears, she must cross back into that country and take up tools she understands only in theory. The search leads through ruined places, old bindings, and forms of magic concerned as much with death as with life. Companions arrive, but none is entirely safe or simple, and the missing father’s role carries obligations that may now be hers. The novel combines a direct rescue quest with an austere magical system and a heroine trained to act despite fear. Its atmosphere is cold, serious, and increasingly uncanny, with every opened gate raising the question of what should have remained closed.
