Electric Idol

Somebody has ordered a heart on a plate. The man sent to collect it has other ideas.

A myth was promised and a survival arrangement arrives. Robert turns the arrow into a job. A jealous goddess becomes a rival with a title and a grudge, and the heart becomes an actual organ somebody has requisitioned. Then she puts two people in a marriage neither wanted and makes the performance of love a condition of staying alive.

Psyche's curation has to read as armour or the book loses its centre. She is an influencer who decides in advance which version of herself the city gets, and it either registers as a survival technique in a place where being watched is a governing condition, or it registers as vanity with a following. The novel has no other account of her.

Internal blockers can be dissolved by one sentence. That is the bind here. There is no external obstacle keeping these two apart. They are married and living together, performing devotion daily, so the only thing holding the plot open is that each has privately decided the other could not want them. One honest remark ends it at any point, and both of them stay quiet for reasons that are architectural rather than human.

Psyche was raised to be looked at. Psyche understood the terms by twelve. Psyche has three sisters carrying the same target because their mother took a title, and the novel is clear that the danger is inherited rather than earned.

Eros is Aphrodite's fixer and the horror is domestic. A son raised as an instrument by a mother who calls it love, conditioned to think of himself as a weapon with a face, and the abuse is written as ordinary family arrangement rather than as gothic excess.

Body scrutiny appears on the page instead of being politely absent. Psyche is plus-sized in a city that trades on appearance, the commentary is quoted rather than summarised, and Robert declines the easier version where the world is kind and only the villain is cruel.

The marriage of convenience does something the trope usually cannot. It is not social convenience or inheritance. It is a legal shield against a specific woman who cannot murder her own daughter-in-law without cost, which gives a familiar device an actual mechanism.

Aphrodite is the best antagonist in the sequence so far because she is a parent. Her weapon is her son, her method is affection with conditions attached, and Robert keeps the relationship recognisable enough to be uncomfortable.

Dual first person suits two people convinced of the same wrong thing. The reader watches each of them misread the other in real time, in alternating chapters, and the dramatic irony is the engine rather than a garnish.

Retelling a myth about a woman who is punished for being looked at, in a city organised entirely around who is watching whom, is a smarter frame than the source strictly requires. Robert found the modern version of the original problem.

Somebody wanted her heart. She is the one who decides what happens to it.
