Alien Clay

A political dissident and specialist in alien life is exiled to a prison colony on a distant world, where survival depends on obedience to a brutal human regime and caution around an ecosystem that refuses familiar categories. The planet holds the ruins of an earlier civilization, but the living environment may be the more important discovery. Native life forms interact, adapt, and reshape one another in ways that challenge the colonists' assumptions about intelligence and individuality.
