A Drop of Corruption

A treasury officer vanishes from a sealed tower at the edge of an empire, leaving behind a case that appears to ignore doors, guards, and ordinary motive. An eccentric investigator and a more grounded assistant are sent to determine whether the disappearance is an elaborate escape, a political maneuver, or something worse. The inquiry quickly becomes a locked-room murder problem shaped by biological engineering, institutional secrecy, and an opponent who seems able to cross protected spaces without being seen. Rather than treating the setting as decoration, the novel makes its strange technology part of the detection itself. Clues must be read through altered bodies, bureaucratic habits, and the limits of official knowledge. The result is a fantasy mystery concerned with method: how to reason clearly when the world has been designed to make certainty difficult.
